Girls State empowers young women. With prominent speakers and an accomplished staff, the program is designed to show delegates their unlimited potential for success. For many delegates, Girls State is the first opportunity they have had to interact with and learn from similarly high caliber young women from different cultural or socioeconomic backgrounds.
Since 1938, the American Legion Auxiliary’s California Girls State has brought together a diverse group of young women for a week-long summer program focused on citizenship and government. Girls State delegates represent a cross-section of California. Each of five hundred sponsored high schools may send only one delegate, selected on the basis of her strong academic performance, dedication to community service, and leadership potential. The Girls State Alumnae Foundation works to keep the alumnae of Girls State in contact and to encourage networking and interaction.
The Girls State Alumnae Foundation is a non-profit charitable corporation dedicated to the continued success of California Girls State. Run entirely by volunteers, every dollar raised by the Foundation is used to further the Girls State experience and to empower the young women who attend.
