Who attends Girls State?

California Girls State draws delegates from 500 high schools across the state.  Delegates have completed their junior year of high school and have strong academic records and a demonstrated interest in leadership and community.  The program is 50% diverse and approximately 50% of the delegates are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

How is Girls State funded?

California Girls State has successfully run for over sixty years at no cost to the delegates.  American Legion Auxiliary Units across the state raise funds for California Girls State on a yearly basis through:

  • Bake Sales

  • Dinners and Dances

  • Rummage Sales

  • Donations from local Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions Clubs, as well as individual sponsors

Who are the Girls State volunteers?

Women from all over the state and nation donate a full week of their lives and often use vacation days or fly themselves to California in order to serve the program.  The staff is comprised of college and graduate students, attorneys, nurses, teachers, legislative assistants, accountants, businesswomen, and mothers, just to name a few.  A core group of dedicated volunteers work year round to plan and prepare for the following year.

I have been selected as a delegate. What do I do now?

First, you should have received medical and parental release forms along with a form for your biography.  If you have not received these forms from your American Legion Auxiliary Unit, please email us at areyoufromgirlsstate@gmail.com and we will assist.

If you have already completed your forms, then a packet will soon be on its way to you.  This packet will include all the information you need, including what to pack, and what you need to do to prepare for Girls State.

I attend or work for a California high school or home school association that does not send a delegate to Girls State. How can I get my high school sponsored?

High schools must be sponsored by a Unit of the California Department of the American Legion Auxiliary.  Information on local units is available at www.calegionaux.org.  You may also send an inquiry to areyoufromgirlsstate@gmail.com and we will work to put you in touch with a sponsoring Unit.
