California Girls State is a week-long summer program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.  Delegates receive practical training in the processes of self government and good citizenship as practiced in our democratic society.  These young leaders set up their own city, county, and state governments, as well as join a political party that most closely aligns with their own beliefs.  The Whig and Tory parties allow citizens to gain knowledge about the operation of a two-party system.

Girls State citizens participate in these instructional political parties, and elections are held to fill city, county, and state positions. Activities include legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, mock trials, a moot court, and voting.  In addition to the focus on government, Girls State provides creative outlets through a talent show, choir, orchestra, and daily newspaper.

Girls State delegates have completed their junior year of high school and are the best and brightest from every region of California.  They have an interest in government, current events, and the law, strong leadership skills, and a top academic record.  Each sponsored high school may send only one delegate.

Girls State is not just any leadership camp. It is a place where young women from all backgrounds come together and form lasting friendships. It is often the first place where these young women meet others of similar caliber. And with so many talented, motivated young women running for the various offices, Girls State can be the first time these young women learn grace in defeat.
